Think of the hard drive as a "brain" it keeps all the information of the whole computer there...the programs, the files, the settings, the drivers, the extras installed on it such as the printer.
Modems are either cards installed inside the computer tower or external ones that allow the computer to "talk" to the internet and telephone lines and faxes (depends on the type that you have). It sends and receives "bytes" of "data" which is electrical impluses. The modem puts the peices back together in a logical sense and sends them to your computer's program that is using it such as this internet explorer you are using to read this or email program. Then you can see what was sent through the modem.
CPU stands for: Central Processing Unit. It is also like a brain and without one, your computer can not function. It is like a traffic director or a traffic stop light. It handles all the tons of impulses going through your computer to each and every process and request and keyboard impulse from typing keys and mouse click on the desktop and handles the screen that you see, etc. The list is enormous of what it handles!
Computers can do nothing without a processor. The older it is the slower your computer responds to the impulses...meaning you click your mouse and wait before it reacts to that.

a hard drive is something you store all the information on, i have no idea what a moderm is, but a modem is something used to connect to the internet using dial-up, and a cpu is a central processing unit, it is used to do all the work that a computer does...not really specific, sorry.

hope this helps -tehchineseboi
