I heard it costs around $50 and was wondering if it was true.

So it's not $50 even in the most expensive place like Tokyo or any other place in Japan? I guess the question should be, what is the most expensive apple in Japan?

A fuji apple might cost 200 yen if it's a choice one. They are individually wrapped with newspaper while on the tree to prevent premature ripening. For 200 yen you are getting a softball-size perfect apple so it's no necessarily a bad deal. New Zealand apples would be much cheaper. Maybe you are thinking of melons?

It depends on many things: the quality of the apple, the place you buy it from, the season, the daily currency rate.

Small sour apple in a big supermarket will cost more than a big sweet apple in 99yen shop or small supermarket, and especially at the local grocery store.

Well, the most expensive thing I've seen was some huge apple for 250 yen, but when there's a sale ( clearance), I7ve bought very sweet Kintaro(red) or Fuji for 50 -75yen, which would be like 45-62cents.
In the national student chain stores Coop(there everything is supposed to be cheaper, but it is not), an apple could be found for 168yen=1.40$(big red one), 145yen =1.21$(big yellow one) and 128=1.06 (small red one, sour). In the supermarkets I usually shop 1 apple (red or yellow, medium) is now 145yen. But I usually shop from 99yen shop, where an apple, well, small one, is 82cents.

You "heard" ? That's absurd ! You can get them at a 100 yen store. About $1...
