OK, I am a certified pizza junkie and have eaten at many of the places suggested by others. I gotta tell you, IMHO...
Best NY Style Pizza I have had is Mulberry Street Pizza.
17040 Ventura Blvd in Encino.
A whole pie is 22 inches, and they use thin SLICED cheese rather than the grated or shreds. The crust is very thin, but not soggy because they do not dump on the sauce. A cheese pizza is great, not too heavy but perfect crust, sauce and cheese, and it will run you $15.99 plus tax.
Another great joint is Lamonica's.
1066 Gayley Ave, Westwood.
They bring in the water from NY. Great pie. I get it by the slice and browse the area.
My other Valley favorite is Joe Peeps.
12460 Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood
It is like a NY pie but with a slightly thicker crust only on the edges. Their sauce has perfect tinge of garlic. If you like toppings you will love this place because they drown the toppings. You may want to ask for light toppings (1/2 the usual amount). They have every topping you could want. Want Mushrooms? choose from fresh, fresh sauteed, or canned.

Like someone said on here there are a lot of mom and pop restaurants thats are hard to find but they serve the best italian food / pizza ever you just need to find them. They are not like those other pizza places where you seemed to find the same old stuff and they remind you of alot of other pizza joints.

You're not looking hard enough... there are plenty of mom & pop places with good pizza. It depends on the style you like too! Warehouse Pizza in La Verne is good, Dalia's, Red Barn, Petrillos, ... give the smaller places a try and you might find the best place!

Because most italians cooks who make the best pizza are smart enough to know there is not al ot of money in the restaurant biz, so they got out of it awhile ago
I would drive around your neighborhood, look in the phone book, ask your neighbors, use a look-up service like Yelp!, to aid you in finding the pizza of your dreams!

because it's not the Northeast . . . aside from Chicago, there really just are not as many "pizza places" anywhere else in the country except the Northeast . . .
it's not that you can't find good pizza, but you have to look harder, because there aren't as many places solely devoted to making pizza . . . i'm sure there are some Italian places that make great pizza, you've just got to find them . . . ask around . . . almost everyone loves pizza, so when they come across amazing pizza, they will remember

hands down the best pizza in in los angeles is damianos on fairfax, across from canter's. i dont know what it is about that pizza but nothing compares to it. i dont eat any other pizza but from there.
i was talking with a delivery person and asked him what was his farthest delivery and he said it was to palmdale! the person who ordered the pizza use to live in the neighborhood but then move to palmdale. he loves the pizza so much that he pays for the outrageous delivery cost to deliver to palmdale. its that good!! im lucky i live 2 miles from damianos.
i laugh everytime i see a pizza question on here because i have yet been to a place that has been suggested by others that even comes close to damianos. not mulberry's. not petrillos (and i grew up in the SGV). nothing!! vito's on vermont was close but now its shut down.
