An agent will want to sign someone that has experiance and a resume that shows it. You will need some television work as well as theatre and fashion print work. AT least some of those.

Talent agents are not the best people to take career advice from sepecialy if the are not signing you. They may say you don't have what it takes, this is not generaly true. What they mean is...they will never sign you. Never quit.

It depends where, in the USA, you live. In NYC, actors invite talent agents to see them perform, and hopefully invite them to their office for an in-person meeting.

Only a Talent Agent or Casting Agent, can determine "if you have what it takes to work in the industry." They are the professionals. The agent takes a lot into consideration when considering representing an actor.
Make sure you have a lot of strong lead roles on your resume, as well as, regional theatre productions.

If an agent already has your "type" on their client list, they may not want another similar type, as they are focusing on the other actor. Many actors NEVER get an agent.
