THE ONLY TIME YOU'D NOTICE THE POWER DRAINING WHILE USING THE AC (NOT UNCOMMON) IS DURING ACCELERATION. ONCE YOUR UP TO SPEED (ON THE HIGHWAY FOR EXAMPLE) YOU SHOULDN'T NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE.
MY SUGGESTION IS WHEN YOU NEED TO ACCELERATE AND POWER IS CRITICAL (PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT ON A BUSY STREET OR ENTERING AN ON RAMP) IS TURN OFF THE AC UNTIL YOUR UP TO SPEED.

thats pretty standard on smaller engined cars, yeah putting it down a gear will help a little though once you hit high-way speed you will probably want top gear again, and at slower suburban speeds you are unlikely to hit top gear so the nett gain would be fairly minimal.

unfortunately the reality is that the A/C will suck up quite a bit of your power. Its up to you whether you want go or comfort in the hot weather

No, leave it in drive as this is where you are supposed to do all normal driving and having the AC on is normal. If it is more power you want, ride with the windows open and the AC off or disconnect the AC electrically and it will not work anymore.

no because you will forget to change gears and burn out your transmission
