static electricity make tiny little electronmics things have shorter lifetimes with less reliability ... it's the P-N junctions whose heart of soul of response-curve precision that gets disrupted to the point of "all bets are off" ... when they get zapped even a little bit, occasionally forcing BIG quantities of current to flow in areas that aren't designed to handle that much
or something like that ...
doesn't really happen all that often in the "real world".
in its defense, static electricity makes real cool demonstrations of "ooooh" stuff, ... little baby lightning bolts, auras, mad-scientist lab backdrops
