Recently picked up motor...Runs great so far.

the first thing I would do is change the lower unit oil. Check the old oil for metal shavings, a burnt smell, or see if there is water in it. If none of the above exist you probably have nothing to worry about. If you find a problem, get the lower unit inspected by a OMC dealer that will warranty thier work.

These engines can go forever. Just keep changing the lower unit oil, watch the seals for deterioration and look carefully for metal filings in the discarded fluids. Get a magnetic drain plug to capture metal filings. If you start to see any filings, it's going to fail in a few hours.

Do an oil change and have the old oil sent out for analysis, it will tell you what metal filings are in there. The gears and bearings are made of different types of metal.

Other than that you can take it apart and look at the gears and bearings for yourself, look for wear on the gear teeth and the bearings should be tight, no side to side movement.

all good answers...but don't bother to send the oil for analysis. that's a little over-kill. the shifter mechanism can "die" from old age, but that doesn't ruin the unit. lack of oil will ruin it.
