If you have two systems at home that are connected through a router; you already have a peer to peer network setup.
2 things however.
Firewall has to be turned off on both the computers in question.
Secondly make sure they are on the same 'workgroup' name.
Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Computer name
There change the workgroup names to anything you want. make sure they're both identical. (another note: make sure you change the workgroup name.. not the description.. this can be confusing)
After that it will require a reboot. Reboot.
From my network places/network/network neighbourhood (depending on what windows version you run) you should beable to see the other computer name there aswell as the one you are on.
You can share files across the network any what have you
from there.
If your using an IP number to connect for a game. Make sure you get the local ip (internal) .. From command prompt, at the C:>
type in ipconfig
press enter
that's the ip/address for the given computer.
Cheers.

well all u have to do is on the two pc and connect the network cable to the back of the computer, after that run them to ur router or network hub.cos when u connect the network cable to the router,it automatically configure it self.but if u have a password to the router.when u on the 2 computers,it will ask u for the password then it will connect
The password is use to secure ur network so that other people will not get access to it.

If you have a router, you already has an network, simply sharing the folders and printers is all you need to make them see and use each others resources.
