There is really nothing you can do. Thats the problem with apartment living. I hear my neighbor all the time. He walks hard and he goes to the bathroom every morning at 2am like clockwork. The only thing you can do is get to know him a little, then let him know about the noises...Hopefully he wont get offended. Other than that, your just gonna have to take this as a learning lesson, and live on the top floor whenever you move again, because this will always be a problem.

Working out is something that he should be allowed to do. Well, if it is very loud you can try telling him to try to tone it down. Otherwise I'm afraid that's just something that goes with the territory. Believe me, there could be bigger problems with noise than just squeaking and some exercise. When I was small we lived in a townhouse and the woman next door would bang on the walls and yell at us because we were making noise. But we were kids and we couldn't help it. It was really scary I still remember hearing this woman banging against our wall and yelling a bunch of crap at us.

The sound can be reduced if he's on carpet. If he already is, then move to a concrete or metal structure building if you prefer the bottom; or move to the top floor.

You can't harass the tenant, and good luck with the landlard.
If you can get into your ceiling without repairable damage, screw a board(s) crosswise at the squeak(s).
Move into the apartment above, I hated being on the bottom and never will do that again!

Try getting some earplugs. I find that they work really well. Or you can get a white noise machine that will drown out the noise. A fan would also work.

Politely recommend a gym... that's not in his apartment. If that doesn't work, ask him about it. Nicely ask if he can be more.. quiet. If he doesn't seem like an approachable guy that won't blow up on you, move apartments.

Move. Don't harrass the dude, cause like you said it's not his fault.
If I lived above you and you came whining to me, I'd go out of my way to be extra noisey.

move to a house. Once you live in a house you never go back to apartment living.

Ear plugs if it's keeping you awake. Other than that turn up the music.
