Could it have already happened?

I don't know about self-aware, but there is already an ethical debate about the use of nano-machines as "Santa Claus Factories." The concept of the Santa Claus factory involves the use of nano-machines (microscopic machines) that can build more nano-machines that, in-turn, can come together to form something (ex: an iPod) on their own. That is, the nano-machines themselves will become a useable object.

We are organic machines that have become self aware. As for human made machines I believe it will take some time yet.

self-awareness is so complex...
how do we know that we are something separate from everything else. We really don't know how self-aware other animlas are: some studies suggest that elephants might be self-aware...and of course, certain monkeys and apes...

could we create a machine that is self-aware...maybe...but even if it did realize that it was self-aware, would it still be bound to its programming...humans to a certain extent are still bound to out programming (instincts)....

I suppose it is possible...i've never heard or read about a scientist denying the possibility. But it seems to me that it is far-fetched...

No, it didn't already happen. We're still probably another 20 years at least away from that. Maybe even a bit more.

They won't be as smart as me though. Maybe as smart as you.

Don't expect Terminator type stuff, we still will always be in control of them.
