Any could work.
I would recommend about a 60 GB hard drive and at least 512 MB of RAM.

Wow these answerers must be rich.
If you don't need to do anything intense you'll be perfectly happy with 500mb of RAM, 1 gig is nice if you want to run several big programs at a time.
You can upgrade your ram easily if you decide you want to do more with your computer.
Hard drive doesn't matter at all. You could get away with a 20 gig hard drive if you wanted. They don't sell those for laptops anymore. Point being, it just depends on how much music/video you want to save. I have 8,000 songs on 36 gigs.
If you run out of space, external hard drives are super cheap.

hard drive space doesn't really matter as long as it is 30gb or more, i'll go with something that comes with out of the box. For winxp, get a least 1 gig of memory. Window vista might require more, it performs best with 3 gigs, ok on 2 gigs, and 1 gig should also be fine, just a bit slower.

It depends on the operating system, I'm not sure with Vista, but to be safe I'd run at least 1 gig of ram for any Operating System... and hard drive space is up to you.
Even the smallest internal hard drives come with enough space to hold the Operating system, so it depends on how much space you want/need for music, games, movies, etc. I'd get the biggest one you can find... but if you are a mild user I'd get a hard drive around 160 gigs.

Generally a laptop has a default configuration of the system about 80 GB hdd and 1 GB ram is the standard config.
Regarding the HDD drives and ram supporting it depends on the model your purchase and the MB it has and when you buy a laptop he clearly tells us how much the system ram can be upgraded and hdd also.

A 80GB hard drive should be enough if you use it for multimedia purposes like viewing/recording TV programmes or 60GB for general uses. About the RAM 512MB would do for general uses, but if you are a gamer use about 1-2GB of RAM for sure & a decent graphics card is needed. If you are going for the new Windows Vista 2GB of RAM is a must.
Good Luck

You can run Damn Small Linux with around 64MB of RAM and 500MB of hard drive, but for Windows XP you need about 10GB of Hard drive and at LEAST 128 MB of RAM, despite the minimum of 64 MB that Microsoft lists. For Vista it is even higher.

RAM and Hard Disk requirements do not depend on whether you are using a laptop or a desktop.
It depends on your usage.
80GB of HDD and 1GB of RAM is needed to run your pc at an average speed but if you plan to use Vista I would recommend 120GB of HDD and 2GB of RAM.
