I think it has too many cars, too many people, and some ridiculous tax laws, like paying more if the ocean can be seen from the top corner of your windows. Wildfires, earthquakes and out of control police officers make it sound like a state to avoid.
And from what I've heard, California doesn't think much of Ohio.

There is no place like it. I would live there but I can't afford to buy and renting is high too.
If I had $3 million I'd live in San Francisco, that's what it would cost. So until I can hit the Poweball I'll be in Arizona.

Yes there are counties in California bigger than many states.
i.e Riverside, Kern, San Bernardino. Also an area north of San Francisco that is truly remote.

I think people have stereotyped California by only thinking about people who live on the coast. See the responses above.

Yes, there's expensive places to live. Yes, there's movie stars. There's also cowboys and farmers and desert dwellers and lots of middle-class folks just raising families in small towns. It's a darn big state.

Aside from the ever-present earthquake/mudslide/brush fire/LA smog threat, and the high cost of living in the nicer areas, it's quite possibly the idea place to live. Personally, I prefer Southern California, especially San Diego and Santa Monica, but Monterey is cool and San Francisco is beautiful (but not my favorite in terms of climate.) I've never lived in CA, but I've been there a lot. If I didn't have such strong ties to where I live now, I'd move to CA in a heartbeat.

I think California is a great place to visit, like on a vacation!
I would not live there because of the reasons the others in this site have mentioned. I agree with them that it has the potential of earthquakes and fires. Besides this, the big cities are crowded and many people live there( who cannot speak English and won't TRY to learn to do that) It is not of my liking enough to move over there. It is just a matter of taste. But to each his own. There are those who might like to live there.
For me, I like only to visit California for vacations. I love San Francisco and from there one can take drives or visits to Monterey and Yosemite National Park, see the redwoods etc. San Francisco itself is interesting enough. Los Angeles has a lot of attractions, tourist-wise. Just my opinion.

California's a big state. There are, of course, the beaches and the cities, but there are also some absolutely beautiful national parks. If you go and you like the outdoors you should go to sequoia national park and yosimite national park. They are breathtaking.

The weather is great and there's a lot of beautiful scenery. Downside: high cost of living and ppl who speak no English at all. I will always be floored by ppl who move to the US, settle in Calif. and who continue to speak only a foreign language. Yeah Americans for the most part have their ancestry from other parts of the world (Europe, Asia, Africa, S. America) and most have found a way to learn some English, even broken English. But Calif really struck me by the huge numbers of non-English speaking ppl.

Don't care much for the liberal left wing people

Well, it's got its issues like any other state. I thought Napa Valley was more liberal, but it's really more conservative. But that's OK, I can deal with it. When I moved here, I knew I'd never live anywhere else, ever.
