Well the quick solution would be to move to a better neighborhood but that isn't always an option. First of all think about when your home is broken into. If it is while you are at work and the house is empty get your neighbors to watch it for you. If it is always when you go out of town to visit someone learn how to hide the signs such as piles of mail in your mailbox. Last but not least if you can afford a security system then get it. Think about the robberies and think if there has to be someone with inside information such as a good friend.

You can install a security system, but if you can't afford it at the time ( because those things can get rather pricey) you can call your local police department and explain to them that you have 3 small children and you're concerned for their safety because of the recent break ins. ask the police to have a car drive by like once or twice an hour just to make sure everything's okay. Most police stations under those circumstances would be more than happy to do that.

I would put bolted locks on all the doors. Block glass windows in basement. Put an alarm system in (using a code only you & your husband know). Make arrangements for boys to wait somewhere if they get locked out and have to wait for you to come home.

Really be aware of the friends your boys are bringing into the house. Purchase a safe and have it built into a hidden place within your bedroom or attic (don't let the boys know its there) it not the boys you have to watch out for, it maybe their friends...boys may talk casually w/o realizing what information they are giving to someone.

Security code all valuables for insurance and police identification purposes.

If anyone loses their keys to the house, hed for home depot and replace the dead bolts themslves 9very easy to do).

Put lights and main television on a timer for when you are not at home. Put motion detectors (lighting) around back & front doors that turn on whenever something moves around your doors at night.

Make sure you have screens on all windows and when leaving them open, put a stick above the window so it only opens a few inches.

Have post office hold all mail when gone for a long period of time.

Plant pricker/thorn bushes outside all windows on the lower floor.

keep all ladders locked in garage or basement (keep locked together).

Try not to discuss any valuables/collectables that you may have with anyone you really don't know.

Keep curtians closed at night and make use of good opaque sheers during the day.

Keep cell phones charged at all times and have an emergency phone ready to grab in case an attempted break-in happens while you are at home.

When having appliances serviced in home, limit the area inwhich they have to move around your home.

Only purchase a firearm if you know for a fact that either you or your husband are truly ready to use it, if it ever comes to that...

I dated a couple of state troopers... secure your home...its worth it for peace of mine!

Move for sure. I would have been out of there long ago.

If you don't want to move or can't move for personal reasons, invest in a home alarm system or private security of some type.

Have other neighbours been broken into? Maybe your neighbours and you can start some type of neighbourhood watch patrol.

Tweety, your job as a parent is to protect your children. Understandably, money is probably an issue, which is one of the reasons why you chose the location that you reside in currently. However, it is apparent that crime is an issue and looking for a place to live is in the best interests of your family, more importantly, your children. Yes, it will be difficult moving, but your safety of your children has to be a higher priority.

if you cant afford to move, then get a great big dog. I have a Great Dane and even thou he is as sweet as can be, if someone comes to the door, is bark is so deep that when i open the door to see whos there, they have already went down to the the bottom step and are ready to run. It is quite funny. That will do the trick.

Can you get a dog? they really do help discourage break ins. I recommend an adult dog from a good rescue group that fosters their pets so the dog's behaviour and personality is known, important since you have kids.
