Could Prince William marry anyone? Like of another ethnicity and social class? Like say he fell for a Japanese-American? Or anyother nationality. And if so how come no one but Princess Diana has tried?

Diana is not the only one to try to marry someone of another race or nationality (and I hope you're referring to the Pakistani doctor and not Dodi al Fayed, who was just a fling). The daughter of HRH the Duke of Gloucester, the Queen's cousin, married a New Zealand Maori a couple of years ago.

As an heir to the throne William needs the sovereign's permission to marry, so he cannot marry anyone he likes without risking his succession. If he insisted on marrying a Catholic then he would no longer be eligible for the throne, like some of the Queen's other cousins (Prince Michael and the Earl of St Andrews).

A very large sections of the UK population would not want William to marry a Catholic. In any case, there is an English Law which expressly forbids the heir to the throne from marrying a Catholic. I'm aware that Catholic forces within the Labour UK.Gov want to change the rules and are pressing hard to eliminate any law, such as the one I have described above. I ought to give Catholics fair warning. While they are 'tolerated' here in England they will never be allowed to have their way. Everytime the Catholic Church speaks, it should remember that this is a powerful 'Protestant' country and will not bend to any proposal put forward by any Catholic. So, my advice to Catholics, is to carry on and enjoy your lives and feel free to express an opinion but never, not even in your worst nightmare should you ever tinker with the Monarchy or any other 'Protestant' aspect of the lives of the British people. The British monarch is the head of the Anglican Church - the Church of England. We do not accept the Pope in any other rank except Bishop of Rome. Dream on. . . . .

Whoever he chooses must meet with the Queen's approval. Since the monarch is also seen as Defender of the Faith, religion may be an issue. No Catholic can currently in line to succession to the throne, but that may one day change. Charles' wish is to be known as Defender of Faiths, being more inclusive of other religious beliefs.
You have not heard of Sophie Rhys Jones,Countess of Wessex,Prince Edward's wife? She married into the Royal Family after Diana's death;she came from a middle-class(not upper-middle or gentry or aristocracy) background. And there will be others;just give William and Harry time. The women these two men will marry must be able to deal with the duties that Royal life will bring--all lived under the constant eye of the paparazzi!

People who are in the line of heirs to the throne must have the monarch's permission to marry. The closer they are to the top of the line of succession, the less chance they have of being allowed to marry unconventionally. I expect that there is some sort of unwritten sliding scale of unconventionality, but obviously Diana met the strictest possible requirements back in the 1980's.

Of course, an heir who renounces their right to the throne can then go off and marry anybody at all.

Of course he can, at his own risk! Prince William can marry anyone BUT if he marries a past/present Roman Catholic, he automatically forfeits his right to the succession to the British Throne (as it is stated on the Act of Settlement).

Charles and Diana getting a divorce was also a huge deal just as Charles and Carmela getting married, even after Diana's death, was a huge deal. Pretty much, the Royals have had their dirt put out very publicly, and it seems to be going towards any thing goes. William, however, seems to be pretty proper and very dedicated to his Grandmother the Queen. He may make the choice to NOT dishonor her out of loyalty. As it appears these days though, he could if he wanted to.

Yes, he can. Princess Diana was his mother. And she was hardly a commoner. The British people would naturally prefer a British Queen, but he is free to marry the woman he loves.

I think she has to be a virgin (which Diana was) which is why Charles was so much older than her, and I think P. Wm was living with this particular girl and I do think there has to be some sort of pedigree associated with her name, which Diana had although it was sorta vague. Wm can not marry whom ever he chooses, he can only marry from a list that is suitable for the royal line. I am not a royal scholar by any means but the media has drilled it in our heads, maybe a englander can tell offer more.

Sure. A better question might be, "Can he marry anyone he wants without renouncing the throne?" And the answer to that would be "no."

Legally, once he is of age, he can marry anyone except a Roman Catholic. There is no restriction as to race, colour, nationality or social class. Naturally, as in any family, he would like to have their approval.
