Why can't the ethernet connection work for both
these connections?
Like if I have comcast cable at home and dsl at the
office, then got a laptop, why won't the highspeed
internet be detected on Dsl and Cable ?

It will, but for certain ISP's you need to have there software installed and the drivers installed for the modems on the computer and they might conflict with each other.

The best way around having to install drivers for modems and software for ISP connections is to have a broadband router connected to each modem at the different locations and all you will have to do is plug into the router when you arrive and surf away.

I'm assuming that your laptop is a personal one, and that the only connection that works is your home cable connection is the one that works.

I'm guessing that at your work place, there is a proxy or vpn server that you must go through in order to gain email and internet access. Ask your employer or fellow employees about this for exactly what to do, as each setup can be different.

In short proxies and vpn connections filter out unwanted users and content in order to keep the network safer, and to keep the employees out of trouble.
