Some landlords will check references only, some will check credit only, and some will check both. This completely varies from landlord to landlord.
To me, references are much more important than credit history. Most people hit a rough patch at one point or another, making their credit suffer for quite a few years. Much more important to me is if they have been current on their rent in the past year and haven't degraded the property.
If you're set on a place, and know they check credit scores, make them aware of your good residential and work references (if you have). If you're not already set on a specific flat, then inquire after a few and ask the landlords whether they check credit score and/or references. With this information, you can apply to the place that rents based on which of the two you look better in....references or credit score.

yeah it all depends where... for example I go to college right now and really all these apartments are for students... we don't have any credit history and the landlords really dont ask for one, but some might... and if you dont have a credit history you can get someone to sign to vouch for you...
