Being over-paranoid is more regrettable.
I know this firsthand from experience with extremely untrusting individuals. They are always miserable and have the worst time forming relationships.
Here's the way I conclude it ultimately:
You be "over-paranoid" and screw yourself over without the chance of not screwing yourself over.
or...
You take the chance of trusting other people and you may or may not get screwed over.
Kinda looks like that last one wins.
Initially though you would not think so. Very deceiving it can be.

I'd rather wake up discovering neither!
But, if I had to choose, I'd say over-paranoid, because waking up to discover that you weren't paranoid enough would eventually lead to to become more paranoid, right?

~~~ I'd love to wake up and discover I hadn't been paranoid enough because sometimes I tend to take my paranoia for granted and let Black Widows do as they please in my house.Then when the killers actually break into my place while I am sleeping,they will attack said killers. Because I wasn't paranoid enough; I failed to hide a gun under my pillow,and now that I could use one, those creepy spiders did the trick.~~~
i guess i'd rather discover that i had not been paranoid enough.
i wouldn't want to go through my whole life giving myself ulcers and heart attacks.
and besides, if i wake up and discover i haven't been paranoid enough... well, hey, i woke up and i'm still alive, right?!
Regret is an unpleasant way to live, so neither.
Paranoia assumes that you are incorrect. Some people may in fact be out to get you.
I think I'd be delighted with either. Wouldn't that be like elightenment, suddenly being given an answer, a choice.
