Westerners are arrogant as a society becuase we havent lost a major war - militarily or culturally - in many generations. This leads use to belive that our culture is superior, and we act like it.
Next, Im sorry, but I prefer the problems of today than institutional problems that existed in the 50/60's - government racism, general sexism, and the rules of society that force people to act a certain way.
The freeing of those problems have led to the problems you mention. Since men/women are equal, men see less reason to treat women as special and with chivalry (why treat them better if they are our equals), but telling generations of blacks that they were victims in the past (however true) has led to many thinking that they deserve something from life and whites being too squeemish to talk about it openly.
Modern celebrities act out their own lives uncaring that they are role models, they are selfish rich people, ones who are undeserving of idolation by the youth of today.
Parents are too busy trying to provide for their children (and their own lives) to prevent the barrage of pop culture, leaving few to develop good role models.
Many people really do not think arrogantly, but feel the need to act like they are expected in order to get ahead in life. But in private, they find things that make them truly happy.
These are just new problems for all of us to learn from, figure out, and find the solutions for. But it beats the past, which was better in memory (and tv) than real life.

I have to say I think you're projecting. I know there's a lot of people like that out there, but I don't believe it is "most" of them. My life is not superficial, and I know very few people that live superficial lives. I also have college kids in and out of my house constantly and I don't know any of them who idolize anyone you mention. Just because the media hype tries to sell them to everyone doesn't mean everyone's buying the hype. But if you're really talking about teenagers, they have always typically idolized vapid idols, whether they be musicians, or models, or actors. When they grow up and mature a little their idols change accordingly. Jenna Jameson? Who on earth idolizes a porn star? That's pretty strange. I know she can be lusted after, but idolized? That's a pretty tall order. Young women and men have been having sex before marriage since marriage was invented. Dressing more modestly didn't change that fact. I don't care for all the skin myself, but studies are showing that kids are less likely to have sex before marriage than they were ten years ago.
All I can say to you is to change your life if you feel it has no significance. But it might be a good idea to stop assuming the majority of Westerners are headed for hell in a hand basket. It just isn't true.

I am a westerner and I too am sick of this superficial trend we are moving towards! I find Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Jenna Jameson, and Snoop Dogg all to be pathetic idiots with a lot of money! I think we are impatient today because the world is just so fast paced, we are constantly pressed for time, and are usually running off little sleep as opposed to the norm of 10hrs/night back in the 40's. I am loyal and patriotic to this conutry and I always respect my elders! I barely ever watch TV, if I do, it's a news program, sports, or something along the lines of discovery, TLC, history or military channel!

IF you are a Westerner, why not include yourself in your opening question? "Why are WE Westerners so arrogant?"
I respect elders, I have patience, sex before marriage is a choice between consenting adults, I am not any more selfish than you are, and loyalty to one's country (versus a politcal party in one's country) is always subject to interpretation.
The 1950s is well-known as an "age of conformity", which changed in the 1960s due to the many social/political and even economical revolutions that occurred. Not all young people today dress "like hookers" or "act like thugs", and I think you do need to realize that many other socities today are going through similar social/political/economical changes which are altering the way they dress and act too.
I for one find it impossible to idolize the "Westerners" that "most of us do", like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Jenna Jameson, and Snoop Dogg. I find it impossible to idolize these celebrities and/or entertainers since they do not even play musical instruments, and their music is largely pop, which I rarely listen to anyways. The young generations in other countries have their own idols to look up to.
While many of them do live superficial lives, and others seem fascinated with the cult of celebrity worship, you have neglected many of the strengths of Western culture, and the fact that most of us do not live our lives in such a way, and that depression existed back in the 1950s and 1960s. I think there is a much better awareness of depression (and how to treat it) today than there was 45 years ago.
Does my response seem "arrogant" to you? This question is not so much a politcal question as it is a social question...and thanks for the thumbs down - I take those as compliments.

Believe me, it's not just Westerners. It's different people from all over the country. My cousins live in Alabama, Virginia, and Ohio and they all listen to this kind of music. It's not just Westerners, it's not just teens, and if u think it is just Westerners then y did u say people in other countries look up to these icons as well? I am 14 and I do not look up to these people, AND I live on the westcoast. I agree that the people that do not have values and idol those celebrities need to get a life, but you also should not stereotype and accuse a certain group of people for something.

try rose colored glasses- back in the 50s, women were forced back into the house after experiencing brief liberalization during the second world war but supporting the war effort at home, people were afraid of what they didn't know, racism, sexism, prejudice in its ugliest forms was largely prevalent in everyday societies and old boys clubs at the establishment all but guaranteed that success was an option to a limited few. I'm not denying that Westerners are arrogant, but at the same time, there can be no doubt we are better off today than were were fifty - sixty years ago

first off, from you to you **** yourself.
with that out of the way I'm a hard working college educated american. Why are we arrogant? its because we're always on the defense from people like you pretending to be american.
you ask "why are YOU westerner so arrogant?" then you claim to be part of the...you? wtf? anyhow, I personally don't give two tiny shits about you or your ****** up version of what america is like. you sit around watching your tv programs from 10,000 miles away and think Jerry Springer is what most Americans are like. get real. Most Americans hate our international policies but can't do anything about it. Most of the people I know wouldn't have anything to do with people like paris hilton or snoop dog. But, I would however bang britney spears from every angle.
You can't look at "stars" who make a few million a minute and expect them to be average. its ignorant for you to even think it.
Oh, fyi back in the 50's a lot of things happened that didn't get thrown on the nightly news. if a 15 year old got pregnant then, they shipped her off to a boarding school so all the neighbors wouldn't see. my father smoked marijauna his first time in the 40's. These "ladies" would put out quicker than they ever will now. Don't believe so uch of what you see on tv. and for crying out loud, don't ask a question on the horseshit beliefs you got from tv.

Cause they all came from New York. Alaska is starting to get that way. I wish they would all go home. The people in Kodiak AK. are still nice, not too many people from NY like only having 4to5 hours of sunlight a day, but the summer makes up for it.

The media has a habit of putting the most ignorant among us in the spotlight because it justifies their pitiful existence. These public figures a caricature of life. They take all of our minute imperfections and magnify them into extreme cases. I would venture a guess and say that 90% of the American public has nothing but disdain for these fools.
