Just because snakes are near, doesn't mean they are poisonous. Just let them be. If they are king snakes, they eat the deadly ones. This is the time of year for hatch-lings to be out and about. Probably a little later this year because the weather was a little different than usual. They are doing you a favor by eating all the rodents that would otherwise come into your home.

Not knowing where you live, or anything about the type of snakes you have, I'm going to offer some generic info:
1) Since it's spring, many snakes are coming out of hibernation, so don't be surprised at the number of skins you are finding. Under buildings and porches are common hibernation holes, so the snakes may have been hidden and are now vacating the premises. The sheds may seem like a lot, because garter snakes hibernate together, in broods, making the spring mating easier because they're all together.
2) depending on the species, the best way to get rid of a snake is to get rid of it's food source. Most likely you've got Garter Snakes which eat garden pests, so you don't want to get rid of them.
3) Don't try to trap them, really; if you are still seeing lots of snakes, call your local Wildlife Department and see what they have to say about trapping, etc.
Just because your grandmother hasn't seen them, doesn't mean they weren't there before ;-) It's possible that a few years ago a development went up which pushed the snakes out in to your area.
But please, don't kill them! They eat pests, most likely mice, which cause far greater problems than the snakes ever could.

Like a few others have mentioned, if you want to be rid of them you would need to eliminate their food source. Since its warmed up, they're out of brumation and have apparently found a ready supply of food on your property.
Snakes are very beneficial, but if you really want them gone, I'd recommend thoroughly checking around your property and under the house for signs of rats or mice and take the steps to irradicate them. Scan any trees on your property for bird's nests. If you can't find any signs of rodents, they may be after baby birds.
Another avenue is if you have a pond as part of your landscape. Ponds draw species such as frogs and toads, which, in turn, will draw in some types of snakes.
So, in short, if you remove their food source, they will move on to hunt somewhere else.
Best of luck to you. Hope this helped some.

Just put on some gloves and Pick them Up & relocate them...
The reason I say use gloves is that Garden/ Garter common snakes excreate a FOUL smelling Stank that I Do not Remember when I picked themup & collected them as a Child. PU
I like to keep The Toads around... (Snakes Eat) the toads eat insects that damage my garden!!
