Because sadly enough, many people base almost their entire vote on the subject of abortion. I guess they figure if the candidate is against or for abortion it identifies where they land on the morality chart. I don't agree with that, but I think it's how a great many people think. It's Giuliani's biggest pain in his rear right now, and though he tries to act as though it doesn't matter, it matters a great deal to a great many people.

See that is the thing. They need to get the votes of the mindless lemmings that Vote totally on the abortion issue. There are a lot of them. Trying to get back the christian vote is what they are after. To me it is a non issue because it never gets handled right anyways so why spend all this time talking about it. I like these people that vote for their canidate that spends 0 time in office addressing the issue, yet they are still happy they voted for them because the person held the same view on abortion that they did 3 years later.
Yes lets hear about important issues for once.

Sorry, but the fundamentalist Christians were the ones that took that issue out of liberal hands in the early 70's, and they made it the issue of the 1980 presidential election. Now you are stuck with it and a president that is in favor of amnesty and citizenship for illegal aliens. But, hey, looks like pro gun control, pro choice, and pro gay marriage Rudy is going to save your party. Looks like the republican party is about to do a slam dunk on the wrong end of the court.

It's an issue for the media, because they know it is an important issue for Americans, and they know there are some Liberal Republicans running for President.
Regardless of which issues some people think should be more important, this one isn't going to go away until it is back where it belongs--with the states.

If abortion is actually murder, then I'd like to see the GOP propose a law that will bring up on the charge of murder-for-hire or murder in the 1st degree for any woman who has an abortion. If it's not 'murder' as defined by law, then what is the crime that makes it mandatory to force a woman to go full term against her wishes?

You will hardly ever see a question to probe the philosophy of basic values given to either party. The Abortion questions have 2 functions. They are intended to pit one group of republicans against another and they also trivialize the Republican party by keeping debate to trivial issues. (trivial in the sense that a president can do little to stop abortions) Democrats are hardly ever asked question about the philosophical base of their policies because The start of all liberal philosophy is based on lies. They assume a lie. then build upon it.

For some reason, and this is one that I will never understand. Many do not vote based upon actual qualifications or platforms rather their stance on what is a non issue settled by the courts almost more than 30 years ago.

Because George W. Bush effectively won the 2004 Presidential election by branding John Kerry a flip-flopper. Someone who was inconsistent in his views. The libs see that Romney, Giuliani, and other front runners have changed their minds on this issue and they hope this will help defeat them.

Abortion is an issue because it's a test to see if we can maintain the separation between Church and State. It's also a bigger issue for women than for men because it's about control over our own bodies.
