If you watch the commercials it appears that unless you buy her a car or diamond earrings your a slacker. My mom always liked going out to eat . She really appreciated a meal that she didn't have to cook.

Marketers create high expectations for every holiday so even if people don't meet them, they at least spend more than most holidays merit. By sunday evening they will have memorial day stuff in the spot the mothers day garbage was. Mothers day is a celebration from the heart not from the store.

Since marketers dreamed up Mother's Day and Father's Day and Grandparent's day and all those other commercial-ridden days, you can bet they set up impossible expectations. It's just their way at taking your money, that's why I told my kids long ago (as my father did to me decades ago) NEVER to give me any Father's Day gifts since all that did was worry them about what to get me, how they were going to be able to afford it, and not respect me much as a dad. Any time my kids call me "daddy", "dad", "old man", etc., my day is made, and I don't need any gifts. They're 21 and 23 years old now, and my son's been in Iraq twice, and I'm as proud as proud can be. God Bless you.
