I know that certain states retain laws regarding Christian Science treatment, so that a practitioner is protected from lawsuit if his client (a Christian Scientist) dies or suffers unduly from following the CS treatment instead of seeking medical treatment.
I don't want to lose my relationship to my family but I don't want my family member to lose their life or suffer loss of limb, sight, etc...and if they do, I would want to pursue the practitioner to the limits of the law. The practitioner doesn't see their client if they are calling by phone, and it would be unconscionable to me if I simply stand by and WATCH.

This is an adult member of my family. They have taken time off from work to avoid getting comments or concerns from co-workers. I'm having a hard time explaining to my daughter why her relative is doing this instead of getting medical attention.

It would be helpful if you add the details on your relationship to the family member. If you are both adults, and you are not responsible for the other party, there is not much you can do--- if you are worried about your sister getting CS treatment, you just try to change her mind as best you can but you can't really sue the practicioner because they were doing what their client asked them to. If it is a child, though, things are a little different. If it is your sister's kid that is sick and your sister is insisting on CS treatment, you can possibly petition the courts to intervene, depending on what state you are in.

Basically if everyone involved is adults, you have no choice but to sit by and watch or speak up.

You can try, but be prepared to fail. You would have to have the family member declared mentally incompetent by the court. That's not an easy task! You have options, and even if you don't like it, one of those options is to let the family member decide his or her own treatment.

This has been tried before and all have failed, yet there was

when there child was seriously ill and they were members of the Christian Science faith

You can sue god if you can find the right attorney. It is the same for kosher foods..Have enough money and a Rabi will bless it.
