It's hard to say. I think there's more teen buying power in the hip-hop/rap and more grownups in the rock.

Over the long-term you're definitely looking at Rock as being the big moneymaker but in the short term and under current markets and trends that would go to rap/hip-hop.
Since Rock's been around for so long it's naturally accumulated a lot of income and revenue over the course of the decades. It's had a lot of followers and a lot of generations have gone through with Rock as the predominant music style. Continued interest in the genre in modern pop culture keeps things going as well.
But if you look at what's being spent the most on right now it's easily the rap scene. Since the rap/hip-hop industry glamorizes things that require lots of money you have more being spent as a direct result. Everything from jewelry, cars, clothing, albums and songs, boyfriends/girlfriends and a lot of other markets contribute to the rap scene that we see today. There's a lot of reasons for it but overall it's just what happens.

Merchandising it's about even, although hip hop you have a lot more endorsements and clothing lines, colognes, etc in retail department stores on top of t-shirts of Tupac and Biggie that continue to sell in t-shirt stores like Hot Topic and Spencers.
Rock musicians tour more than hip hop artists do because venues are reluctant to stage hip hop shows unless it's someone that's been around for a really long time. Most hip hop acts play club size shows, there are exceptions of course. This doesn't apply outside of the US where a hip hop act can have no problem playing theaters to arenas. Most of them wind up playing Coachella and rock fests, but the big hip hop festival tour this year has RATM headlining.
Touring is where the money's at so rock wins out.

Wow, it truly is truly humorous how delusional and tv-like people's perceptions of the entertainment industry are. i'm going to allow you already know a sprint secret-they only provide off the visual allure that it is so difficult to make it because of the fact they pick to maintain you out. Going to variety one on the billboard charts, definite, is tough; yet working at the back of the curtain and holding a reasonable existence type is high quality. what do you think of maximum of la does? pass to the section the place issues happen. pass to an accreditted college for mixing or enhancing music, or each and every of the technical at the back of the scences crap. Theres lots-and you're able to make a sturdy residing. And who knows of, once you develope those skills, you expertise will lead you to the subsequent enormous element. lots speedier than pondering it. sturdy success. My advice:there are 2 substantial places to get began-in case you're sturdy looking, pass to la; in case you're grotesque, you better initiate in NYC, they are greater accepting there! Cheers!

Rap/hip-hop short term (last few years), rock longterm is a much higher performer and will probably continue to be due to its deep rooted influence in many other genre. Rap has not yet proved to be anything but a VERY popular phase in modern music.
