they are not mean creatures-----if they pinch it is only because they are trying to keep from falling-----they get quite tame and seem to enjoy handling and walking on your hand and arm------the larger one can hurt a little bit if they pinch------not bad------make them feel secure and they will have no reason to grasp with their pincers.

Hermit crabs can and do pinch hard enough to make a person bruised or bleed. When one holds on, it is best to hold it under cold water until it releases. Even though they pinch, this is one of the most popular pets we sell because children are fascinated by just watching them walk around in a cage.

Hermit crabs love attention. When they are up, you can carefully take them out of their crabitat. What do they like to do? Climb! Let them climb all over your shirt while you are watching TV or a movie. You can also exercise them by letting them walk across your hands in sequence (kind of like a crab treadmill). One important thing is to be sure that they don't fall. Falling from a height of 3 ft. can be fatal for many crabs. Also, THE FEAR OF FALLING IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON CRABS PINCH. If you keep them in a position where they aren't going to fall, they likely won't pinch.

They can pinch very hard, usually if they are afraid of falling. To get them to release, you can pour warm water over them. To prevent them from pinching you in the first place, try to keep your hand flat and horizontal so they don't have anything to grab onto and so they won't feel the need to hang on for fear of falling. If they have molted recently, the tips of their legs may be very sharp (they look like small black needle tips). While these usually don't hurt, they may feel a little uncomfortable.
