I was watching the movie "Copote" and his character came across as being single and a homosexual. Was he depicted properly or is/was he straight?

Truman Capote was openly gay at a time when homosexuality was not openly discussed. He was also a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show". Anyone watching one of Capote's fairly frequent appearances with Carson would not have questioned his sexual preferences.
