My suggestion would be to first determine what is causing anxiety-life stress, interpersonal troubles, housing market crash, or a physical ailment? Either way, I know from experience that chamomile tea works as a herbal remedy. Also, I would try a supplement called GABA (gammabutyric acid) available over the counter at any local drug store or pharmacy. This has a neurotransmitter calming effect. Perhaps also, if older, say over 40, melatonin supplements will help quell anxiety and give a good sleep, if taken before bedtime. But of course, exercise probably is the simplest and best remedy. Hope this helps.

I am with you, I really don't like taking prescrip meds either. Some work well but most of the time I seem to suffer from at least a few of the side effects and I always worry about the addictive qualities of strong meds. I have tried a few natural alternatives and have had much better luck. I have also found that by simply changing my diet a little I can usually keep my headaches at bay before they start. See the link below, I have found it to be very helpful for finding info about migraines.

Stress could be the cause of your migraines. Everyone needs at least 20 minutes a day of meditation or quiet time. Drop the aspirins and switch to magnesium and Co Q-10. Emergency rooms use magnesium injections to instantly stop migraines.

For Headaches / Migraines I always swear by Aromatherapy Oils. My mum suffered with Mirgraines all the time but since I introduced these oils to her i'm thankful to say she has less mirgraines now. If and when she does have a headache they are not as exstream and they go away much more quickily.
The BEST pure essential oils for mirgraines and headaches are
Lavender
Peppermint
Melissa
Jasmine
Eucalyptus
Rosemary.
My mum finds Lavender to work best for her. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST ABOUT USING JASMINE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT.
You can easily buy these oils in a health shop and they do not cost too much. You will find them in a small dark coloured bottled and they will say on them PURE essential oils of Lavender or which ever one you go for. All you need to do is buy a carrier oil (again this is cheap). Mix approx 5 drops of the chosen oil into 3 tablespoons of carrier oil then massage the oil into your temple, across your forehead and either side of your eyes by your hairline. IF using Lavender this is SAFE to use without a carrier oil. You can also add 8 drops of your chosen oil to your bath water. Or burn 10 drops on a oil burner and allow the Aroma to fill the air of your place of rest, then just lay back and breath in the Aroma.
You can only try and see if these work for you. My mum tried every drug on the market, prescribed and over the counter with no success. She even tried those cool pads you can get which you place on your forehead. They work for some but oils worked best for my mum.

I (used to) to suffer from migraines, really bad ones too. I threw up every time. the only thing that helps me is marijuana. the doctor tried vicoprofen and some other junk but none of it helped. then i read online that marijuana helps migraines better than anything. i am not a pothead, i only use when i must. if you're not too big on smoking, google “light bulb vaporizer” with one of those, you only inhale thc, and other cannaboids, but no tars, or other toxins

I know exactly how you feel
One thing that helped me was the get an acurpressure massage on a regular bases.
When the vessels in the head constrict, you do not notice. But when they start to relax that is when the pain hits with all of the other symptoms. Keeping the blood flow going will help. Another common problem that will make some people worse is when they have a migrain they tense up and they end up with a bad tension headache on top of the migrain. So learning relaxation exercises will help. And they help the body to deal with pain.
As for herbs these might help
Calendula it increases blood circulation it also reduces inflammation.
Pour one cup of boiling water overe two teaspoons of dried calendula petals steep for ten min then strain drink two or three cups of warm tea daily
Rose hips also are an anti-inflammatory
please note that before taking st. john's wort ask your Dr or pharmasist it does intereact with certin med's and DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE ALREADY TAKING AN ANTI-DEPRESSANT
a recipe especially for migraines
1 2/3 oz st. john's wort flowers
1 oz valerian
1 oz linden flowers
1/4 oz juniper berries
mix together and store in an air tight container
My Grand Mum prefered to use a tin
To Make tea
use one teaspoon of the mixture per cup of boiling water. steep for ten min strain this tea helps dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. If your headaches are triggered by weather, drink the tea as the weather is changing.
In my old medical books (going back over 150 years ago)
the treatment for migrain was to drink coffee and walk this will make the headache more intence but it will get rid of it quicker. For those people who have them for days it might be an option.
I know of a guy who has tried this and he needs to drink six cups of strong coffee and walk for eight miles. But when he is done the pain is gone. But he says that doing this makes it worse for awhile. He had to play around with how much coffee and how far he had to walk
At the pharmacy they carry a herb remedie it is a preventative
it starts with a f but for the life of me I can not remember the name but if you ask the pharmasist they will know or email me and I will find out for you. It is an old North American Indian cure.
I found the name of the herb it is feverfew and if you also take gingo biloba it will work better
I found some more treatments
the essential oil of lavender (it has to be the essential oil and not the fake perfume kind)
get a sm bottle when you get the first sign's of a migrain put a couple of drops on a clean cloth and smell it
it has to be at the first sign it may make it worse for a while but it will take it away.
If you are laying down putting a few drops of the oil on your pillow
A footbath diverts the blood supply from your head to your feet Bathe your feet in a basin of 958F water add hot water at five minute intervals until 115*F is reached/ After soaking your feet for five minutes. Pour in cold water until the temperature is lukewarm put ont wool socks asnd lid down for about 20 min's
Helpl form acupressure
use your thumb and index finger to press against the bridge of your nose at the corners of your eyes or rub the center of the fleshy webbing between your index and thumb
poultices for pain
cold compress
moisten a cloth with cold water put two drops of peppernint oil on it and apply it to the painful area for about 15 min
potato poultice
cut 2 large unpeeled potatoes into quarters and boil until tender. mash them and press out the excess moisture .Wrap the warm mixture in a cloth placeit on the back of the neck for about 15 min's
Horseradish poultice
Add a small amout of water to finely grated horseradish wrap it in a cloth apply it to the neck for not more than 5 min this will stimulate the skin which helps extinguish headache p ain if yoiur skin is sensitive spread cream over your neck before applying the poultice

Headache is among the most common medical complaints. The majority of them are not life threatening. They can be classified into three main categories, namely:
·Tension headaches
·Migraine headache
·Cluster headaches
Tension Headaches are the most common type of headaches. Migraines have well-defined attacks with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to lights and sounds. Cluster headaches are repetitive ones that occur for weeks to months at a time, followed by periods of remission.
Common Causes of Head ache
·Precise cause of it is not known
·Several physiologic changes in the head and brain
·Dilation and constriction of blood vessels
·Abnormal activity of certain neurons
·Genetic factors may be a cause for migraines
·Smoking and alcohol may be a cause cluster headaches
Home Remedies for Head ache
Roast some caraway seeds dry. Tie in a soft handkerchief or muslin cloth and sniff to get a relief from headaches.
Apply the paste of 3-4 cloves on the fore head.
Migraine relief using Grapes
Migraine relief can be obtained from the juice of ripe grapes and is an effective home remedy. It is said that King Jamshed of Persia, who was very fond of grapes, once stored the juice of grapes well packed in bottles and made it public that the bottles contained strong poison so as to prevent others from taking it. It so happened that the king\'s wife was struck with migraine and having obtained no relief from any treatment, decided to end her life by taking this so-called ‘poison’. She took it several times in small doses and contrary to her expectations, it gave her great relief instead of killing her.
Migraine relief using Niacin
Niacin has proved helpful in relieving migraine pain. Valuable sources of this vitamin are yeast, whole wheat, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, nuts, sunflower seeds, liver, and fish. Vitamin I complex tablets containing 100 mg of niacin can be taken for the same purpose.
Relieving Migraine using Cabbage Leaf Compress
An ancient folk remedy for relieving the pain of migraine is a cabbage leaf compress. A few leaves of the vegetable should be crushed, and then placed in a cloth and bound on the forehead at bedtime, or when convenient during the day. The Compress should be renewed when the leaves dry out.
Migraine treatment using Lemon Crust
The crusts of lemon have also been found beneficial in the treatment of migraine. These crusts should be included into a fine paste in a mortar. The paste should be applied, it plaster on the forehead. It will provide great relief.
Natural Migraine headache treatment using Vegetable Juices
Carrot juice, in combination with spinach like, or beet and cucumber juices, has been found beneficial in the treatment of migraine. In the first combination, 200 ml of spinach juice may be mixed with 300 ml of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml or half a litre of the combined juices. In the second combination, 100 ml each of beet and cucumber juices may be mixed with 300 ml of carrot juice.
Migraine relief diet
Fasting on orange juice and water
It is essential to undertake a thorough cleansing of the system and adopt vitality-building measures. To begin with, the patient should resort to fasting on orange juice and water for two or three days. If the orange juice does not agree with the patient, juices of vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, and celery may be taken.
Avoid foods like white flour products, sugar, tinned or preserved foods, etc
Foods which should be avoided are white flour products, sugar, confectionery, rich cakes, pastries, sweets, refined cereals, greasy foods, tinned or preserved foods, pickles, condiments, and sauces.
All-fruit diet
After the short juice fast, the patient may adopt an all-fruit diet for about five days, taking three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits.
Well-balanced diet of seeds, nuts etc.
Thereafter the patient should follow a well-balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits. This diet should be supplemented with milk, yoghurt, buttermilk, vegetable oils, and honey. Further short periods of the all-fruit diet may be necessary at intervals of a month or two, according to the requirement of the case.
Eat frequent small meals, Copious drinking of water is essential.
The patient should eat frequent small meals rather than a few large ones. Overeating should be avoided. Copious drinking of water is recommended.
Other migraine treatment
Take warm-water enema to cleanse bowels
During the initial two or three days of the juice fast, a warm water enema may be taken daily to cleanse the bowels.
Hot bath, cold compress applied to head
A hot fool bath, fomentation over the stomach and spine, cold compress (4.5\JC to 15.6\JC) applied to the head, and towels wrung out of very hot water and frequently applied to the neck will go a long way in relieving migraine headaches.
Plenty of exercise and walk in fresh air is essential-
The patient should also take plenty of exercise and walk in the fresh air.
Primrose oil, is an anti-inflammatory agent, that keeps the blood vessels from constricting.
Multivitamin and mineral formula, they are necessary daily to complement the nutrients we do not include in our diet.
Rutin, removes toxic metals which may cause migraines.
Garlic, is a potent detoxifier.
Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, helps in producing an anti stress adrenal hormone and enhances immunity.
In addition there are a variety of herbs that can help to control and relieve migraines:
Cordyceps, reduce anxiety and stress, and at the same time promote sleep.
Feverfew reduces discomfort and pain. Caution: Avoid during pregnancy.
Wet a towel liberally, then squeeze, not wring, some of the water out. Fold until the towel can easily be placed in the freezer. Leave in for about five minutes or until the towel begins to stiffen up. Unfold the towel and refold, trying to place the frozen section towards the middle and the wet sections toward the outside. When the towel is reasonably frozen, place around the head and eyes.
Another home remedy is salt consumption. If the migraine is in the starting stages, a snack of Fritos corn chips, fries covered with large amounts of salt or any other very salty food will calm the attack. Sometimes this calm before the storm is the end, sometimes it is not. However, this calm period does provide you with time to prepare the frozen towel treatment.
This next treatment requires a second person. In a darkened quiet room, relax as someone massages your scalp. Massage the head, but not the temples. Another form is to be massaged with the ice towel wrap on the head and eyes. Ten minutes of massage should do the trick, if not then it is time for something else.
A good way to relieve the headache is to prevent it. Close scrutiny can uncover patterns, such as getting a migraine attack after eating certain foods or after not getting enough sleep. Some people may find that the attack is caused from bright or flashing lights, loud noise or even stress. Defining the cause is a giant step in controlling and relieving migraine headache attacks.
Since stress is considered to be the key factor in causing these painful episodes, the home remedies for Migraine Headaches usually deal with relieving tension.
Aromatherapy is an effective cure for relieving stress at any time. It can be most beneficial to use a scent, or a combination of aromas, to relieve the pain of a headache. Some of the best stress-busting scents include Lavender, Peppermint, Sandalwood, or Eucalyptus. You can either bathe using an Aroma-rich soap or body wash, light candles that contain these fragrances, or sprinkle an oil or two on a hankie. Place the hankie where you can smell it and inhale the aroma. You can even put the scented hankie on your pillowcase when you go to bed.
Another home remedy for a Migraine Headache is to visit a licensed Massage Therapist. He or she can use a combination of Aromatherapy and massage to relieve your stress. The scents of particular oils and the massaging action will also loosen up tense, achy muscles.
If you suffer from Migraine Headaches, you can also perform a mini-massage on yourself to relieve the pain. Place a drop or two of Lavender, Peppermint, Sandalwood, or Eucalyptus oil on your forefingers. Place your forefingers on your temples, and gently rub in a circular motion. You should also rub the back of your neck as well, to help relieve pain and stiffness.
If before sunrise or after sunset and the stomach is empty, do a head stand. This increases blood flow in the head and stops most forms of headache.
There are a number of vitamins and supplements you can also take as home remedies for Migraine Headaches. When you choose a multi-vitamin to take every day, you should make sure it contains plenty of Vitamin B and C. Both vitamins can be helpful because they help your body produce a hormone that naturally relieves stress, a key factor shown to cause Migraine Headaches.
