I don't understand the meaning of "space" in this context. If we take say a quartz crystal there are no spaces in it as the atoms are completely compacted together. I read that the angle between cystal faces is controlled by the spacing between lattice points. Are lattice points like the centre of atoms? Any help would be appreciated.

The lattice points are the positions of the atomic nuclei. The "space" between nuclei is filled by the electrons, in the sense that other atoms can't get through. It might help you to think of the electron cloud as a force field, rather than a bunch of tiny orbiting particles.

the nuclei of the atoms are not touching each other. they are bonded by the sharing of electrons so there is physical "space" between them...the lattice points are the electrons.
