I would ask them point blank why they do that? Tell them you find it rude and unfunny.

I always start talking in a southern US accent when I run into someone where I live that HAS a southern accent--NOT because I am trying to be rude or cruel or mocking---I just think accents are really cute... you will find that EVERYONE will try to mimick your accent---not necessarily are they trying to be mean---but if you FEEL that way, maybe you should change your attitude a bit.... and people saying "dumb stuff" is just human nature... I have ALWAYS loved an Irish accent but could NEVER try to mimick it because I've never been good at it...I'm not good with accents at AL except for mimicking southern US... but I have the deepest respect for their accents AND yours....try not to be so sensitive about it---if an AMERICAN was living in Ireland, I would bet the Irish people he would meet would probably do the same to HIM...because he would sound different to THEM....What comes out of the mouth may be "different" but what comes from the heart sounds all the same...be PROUD of your accent and be PROUD that people want to try to copy it....Maybe one day when you hear them totally wrecking your speech, you should turn to them and tell them "NO, try saying it THIS way".... and TEACH them how to say the words the way you do........

I know this sounds childish, but, you first have to understand that people are only picking on your accent because they think it is cool. It's kinda bordering on envy (or sometimes attraction.
As far as getting them to stop making fun of it, there are places where you can to "Inflection Classes" to help tone down the accent (though some like myself would argue not to alter yourself that way).
More realisticaly, you can try
1) -Simply discussing how the picking makes you feel with your friends...
2) -Try and turn the tables...put people in a situation with several other "accented" people so that the offenders accent gets the attention draw...
3) -Learn to make light of the situation toss some Irish humor or impersonations thier way.
Lastly, again, keep in mind MOST of the time people don't intend to offend when they do, and if they are the kind of jerks who are intentionally pushing buttons...screw em' who cares about fools like that?

If people mock you, its just a sign that their jealous of you or envy you. In your case, its because you have a real Irish accent. I say don't mind them and just let theme be. Their not gonna get something out of it anyway. just a moment of happiness out of their pitifully lives.

P.S. to some girl,( like me) an irish accent is pretty damn cute, so what ever you do dont lose it.

Aww I think the Irish accent is cute. My Grandpa was Irish. But everyone tends to make fun of accents in the United States. So don't take it too seriously :)

Hon, don't worry about this. The Irish accent is a beautiful one. Be proud of it. Be proud of your heritage. Just tell these people how you feel when they do this and that you don't appreciate it and ask them to stop. If they don't then stay away from them. If they are true friends they will stop. I'm Irish American and wish I had that beautiful accent. Accents of all kinds, I believe are beautiful.

Strange as it may sound this is one of the ways that people try to make friendly contact (of course some people are just being rude).

Don't assume they expect you to react negatively. They may expect you to laugh, and find them witty, and ask them questions about their culture and heritage and share some from your own.

In the beginning of a friendship, or even at a first meeting, we notice what is different about someone. If the person has a larger than average nose, we can't help but notice, and it's difficult to keep from staring at it. But as we get to know someone, we notice the similarities, or the hidden qualities that makes the person so special...and we literally forget the differences. (This can happen with even very obvious differences).

Give the people that are teasing you a chance to get to know you. Think of some funny replies. Create your own spoof of a Texas drawl, and use it when you need to. (Tell them this is the way you really sound, but you want people to think you finished third grade.)

I'm British by birth and went to school in the US and had the same problem, still do. If you live in the states you might want to mock them right back in a false American accent. God Bless The UK!!!

Tell them it's offensive. That usually stops most people in their tracks. It doesn't matter if people mean to offend or not, they are and they need to learn a lesson.

I'm a Cherokee-Irish gal from Tennessee, and there was one guy who when he found out where I was from and that I was Indian, he started in on the stereotypes. I told him right then and there it was offensive, and he never showed his face again. Serves the mofo right.

Never had the Irish stereotypes flung at me though, I look Native and consider myself Native instead of Irish.

Honestly, I don't know how to stop them but from now on I will never mock anyone's accent again. I didn't realize it was so rude until I read your question. Sorry!!

I love the Irish brogue. Don't let anybody bother you about your accent, it's beautiful. Just laugh and tell them they are just jealous because they can't talk as you do. I live in the south (USA) - have you ever heard us talk? you don't need to let people mocking you bother you - just consider the source and go on.
