I live in Kentucky. And my Hostas and Day Lillies were just starting to look good when my husband decided to weed eat this afternoon. He said they looked like "weeds" to him. I could have KILLED him. All that is left are little STUBS where the plants used to be. Is there any hope for the plants to return any time soon? Or are they done for the season?

The hostas should make a full recovery this year. I think the daylillies should come back and bloom this year, not real sure.but both should be alright in the long run. In return for cutting down your flowers make him help weed your flower beds that way he can learn what are flowers and what ain't. I cut my girls black-eyed susans down last week mistaking them for weeds and that was my punishment..lol

Oh I would cry!! I love my hostas and my day lillies. I think they will both come back. A few years ago we had a really dry summer and my hostas turned brown and looked horrible so I chopped them back to the ground. A week later I had baby sprouts saying hello. No I am not suggesting for anyone to do that. I just wanted to let you know they came back for me. They are beautiful fighters. I don't know if your daylillies will bloom this year but I am sure they will grow green for you. No worries enjoy your garden.

The day lillies will definitely come back, in fact once they are established they are very hard to get rid of.

I'm not sure about the hostas, but i think they will also come back since they are lily like.

Just keep the beds watered and I'm pretty sure in just a few weeks you will see new shoots. Both plants have roots that are not quite bulbs (maybe tubers?) and so as long as these roots are in place and it is warm and the beds kept moist they should sprout new leaves shortly.

Note to flyaway below--yes I knew they were not bulbs, wasn't sure if classified as tubers or corms, but either way they have a fleshy water storing root and they will regrow. We used to mow the day lilies down intentionally and they'd come right back.

The Hosta definately will. Probably the daylillies too.

Forgive him. No real damage done and Day Lillies do look an awful lot like grass.

No excuse for the Hosta but they are tough as nails.

Not to worry. Be patient and both should be fine, I've had deer nibble both daylilys and hosta down to the ground and they came back. Better your hubby did this early in the growing season rather than later. Maybe you can still get some blooms this year. Good luck!

They will re-grow, but chances are they won't bloom, and if they do it will be very late in the season. I had this same problem: my brother kept mowing down my irises and paperwhites. Make sure you set up a border, i used bricks. It doesn't take away from the aesthetic appeal at all. If you DO have them marked, take away your husband's weed eater...

For the person above, daylilles grow nodes on some roots, sort of like monkey grass, for water storage. They aren't bulbs, and therefore lack the papery coat on the outside; nor are they tubers like potatoes, because a tuber is a sort of stem. Consequentially, they don't keep for very long.

The flora are high-quality...your hostas are perennial & your lillies are bulbs...worry strengthen from below the floor...the hostas will return purely like if a rabbit chewed on them, yet you're able to or won't see your lillies around Sept., reckoning on the type...i comprehend the Stellas will return in a pair of month. Take hubby on a backyard excursion one afternoon...LOL

Good lord..hostas are like herpies. Once you've got 'em you can't get rid of 'em. Don't worry, those will be back. The lillies should make it ,probably be back by the end of summer.

Done for the season. You wont see anything till next year, maybe. I would give him a shovel and tell him to start digging a large hole so you can push him into it LOL!!!
