Believe it or not, "Sewing for Dummies" is a very resourceful book for a beginner. I use it for reference and love the way it answers your question by going into enough detail to help but not bore you.

I also have "The New Complete Guide to Sewing" by Reader's Digest. It has lots of pictures and is a very handy resource as it goes into more detail.

I find them both to be an absolute must for my library as they both are great and I can cross reference between them.

When I started sewing about 2 yrs ago I used the book "Garments for beginners" by Coats & Clark ISBN 0-86573-328-7 which I bought off of Amazon was excellent. Simplicity's "Simply the Best Sewing Book" ISBN 0-7394-2100 is great' An older edition of the Reader's Digest "Complete Guide to Sewing" is also helpful. The "Everything Sewing Book" is also good for beginners. Check out your local library also for great references.

In the fabric store, look for the rack of EZ or Kwik Sew patterns, or choose any pattern labelled "easy" in one of the books. Start with home dec, like pillows or curtains. Use the pattern side by side with the operating manual that came with your machine. Have fun!
