do i have to take out my old 1gb ram and replace it with a 2 gb ram or should i just add 1gb ram on it and which one is better

depends on what you have installed in it now
example: 2 sticks of 512 and 2 continuity sticks or 4 sticks of 256mb. however you got it set up you can put 2 sticks of 1gb each in the first 2 slots and put 2 continuity sticks in the remaining slots.

OMG.....Why the hell do u even want to upgrade your RAM in the first place?????? well, if u want to, then i'd suggest adding another 1GB RAM to ur existing 1GB one............that way if one gets faulty, you'll have the other one to work........ Plus having 2 RAMS is always better than only 1................

If it were me, I would simply add a 1gb chip. 2gb is a lot of memory. Besides, your pc might not support 2gb chips, check your documentation to make sure. Or you can use a tool like www.crucial.com systemscanner to tell you what your pc can handle.
