To the best of my knowledge it will not cause any type of explosion. I have never heard of anything like that ever happening.
Myself I will not put any water in my radiator or over flow tank. I use nothing but coolant/antifreeze. That's included in the over flow. You can also get additional coolant help with products that you can add that will help keep your radiator cool.

It's vented and won't "blow up"
It may make a mess when the engine warms up. But you can wash it off with a hose.
Well, better yet, try to suck some out before that happens.

Siphon off enough to bring it down to the line marked full, and let it into a receptacle you can then close and use when necessary

No. It will not blow up. It will just run out of the overflow hole in the reservoir. It is designed to work this way.

Disconnect the tube, take the reservoir out and empty it.
