Try planting more than just one type of flower in your window boxes for some real interest and color. Here is what I put in mine... english ivy, dianthas (red and purple ones), marigolds, and dusty miller. Arrange it so that the taller plants are in the back and the english ivy trails over the sides.

No individual flower lasts year after year. Flowers have a purpose - they are to attract a pollinator, become fertilized, and then grow into a seed or pod or fruit, and provide a means for creating their "offspring". If a flower stayed in flower form forever, then there would never be seeds, which is the whole point of flowers. Perennial plants live from year to year. Some have longer bloom periods than others, but none bloom non-stop, all the time.

I have very good luck with Ivy Geraniums. They get really full and bloom till frost. They like the sun and can be neglected a bit without the disastrous results you would have if you did the same with wave petunias. Be sure to add water absorbing crystals to your potting soil for extra insurance.

Geraniums can take a lot of hot sun and dry weather. There are plenty of colours available at nurseries. They will also be able to make suggestions depending on the amount of sunshine the plants will get. Good Luck!
