A great writer of poetic prose. On the Road reads like an epic poem.

Kerouac was/is admired because he was a free spirit who, at least for a short period of his life, did what most Americans secretly dream of doing; being exactly who they are and not who/what society wants them to be.

He stayed true to his muse and used his voice in an original way that made our heads spin with the speed and beauty of it.
A true original. He was a lapsed Bhuddist that kept faith with himself and loved the diamond sutra for what it was. It's hard to compare his work to anyone but himself.

He's the Jackson Pollock of literature. That is, he's more prized for the fact that he did what he did, than appreciated for the quality of what he did.

Actually, he's appreciated for the way he behaved and self-abused. Some people admire it.
