I just bought a used 1991 Ford Tempo and I noticed that when the vehicle is shut off and I get out of the car the "engine fan" is running. Now it has been a few years since I have had a vehicle this old, but how long is the fan supposed to run for? Sometimes it seems like it is running for 10 minutes.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HEADLIGHT FLUID (oops caps was on)

The fan on your Tempo is electrically controlled rather than belt drive. The temperature sensors tell it when to turn off, and, yes, it is normal for it to run several minutes after the engine is shut off. Because of this, you should always disconnect your battery before doing any engine work yourself.

There is a temperature sensor in or on the radiator that controls the cooling fan that turn it on if the coolant in the bottom of the radiator gets too hot.

As some people stated, it does NOT cool the engine down. It cools down the coolant in the radiator only.

If it's a very warm day and you turned the engine off durring a high cycle of the cooling system it could run for 10 minutes and not cause a serious drain on the battery.

However, if it goes more the 20 minutes, you may want to have your cooling system checked out for a posible problem.

hmmm.. are you referring to the radiator fan? The fan on the radiator is set to a temp controlled relay. The main power supply on these fans usually come straight off of a fuse connected directly to the battery. So for a radiator fan to run while the car is off is perfectly normal. You may have only started noticing it or the temp relay may just be a little more sensative now that its a little older and has a few miles on it. Either way its nothing to worry about unless it NEVER goes off. If you are reffering to the climate control fan then Im sooooo lost lol.

The fan is controlled by a temperature sensor, so when the temp is at the design limit, the fan will turn off. It's very possible the sensor is bad, so check with the dealer and get their opinion as all cars are different, and these sensors are not that expensive.

The fan will run to cool until the engine reaches a specified temperature.

It is designed to do that.

It's controlled by a thermostat... depends how hot the engine is when you shut it off. 10 min is not unreasonable.

that's about normal for it ,its supposed to do that it helps cool the engine off even after the key has been turned off,but as long as its not running the battery down on it,its doing what it should, good luck hope this helps.

Perhaps you should make sure you've got a full tank of headlight fluid. A lot of older models will have the fan continue to run to compensate for the lack of headlight fluid. Hope that helps.
