Trammell had the bad timing to play concurrent with Ozzie, who redefined how shortstop could be played defensively, and Ripken, who showed that SS could be a power player. Alan was okay at both but not superstar-class at either. He has deserved better in the voting but probably never will get it.
I think Larkin might similarly get dismissed, and he's Hall worthy too. Right when he should have taken the shortstop spotlight -- Ozzie retired, Cal past Gehrig and on his long, graceful ride home -- up popped the Trinity, Jeter, Garciaparra, and the tsunami of Rodriguez. Despite winning an NL MVP, Larkin never got the bigger media coverage he should have because, suddenly, he wasn't the best shortstop in baseball.

Because Ozzie is the best defensive short-stop of all time. Contrary to popular opinion, defense should be a consideration in hall voting.
But don't worry, Trammell will make it eventually. If he was as good with the leather as the Wizard was, he'd be in already. That's not to say Trammell was a clod out there. he was a sound defensive player. But Ozzie is the best ever.

The raw stats are comparable, but here are some others to consider.
Gold Gloves: Ozzie-13, Trammell-4
All Star: Ozzie-15 Trammell-6
Post Season: Ozzie-4 appearances, 3 World Series, won one Championship, NLCS MVP. Trammell-2 appearances, 1 Championship.

I'm on the fence about Tram, lean toward No. But Ozzie has no business being in! ONLY reason he is in is he was A)Nice to media, B)Nice to fans. C)Great defense, which is not enough! D)Did backflips, fans loved it. E)Played majority of career in St Louis, whose players are almost always overrated because of their great fanbase. F), and most important, was shown on the most popular Nationally televised baseball highlight show every Saturday morning doing a backflip and goofing around. People are dumb, people are sheep. If you are kind and humble, fans will love you, even if you suck. I live in Detroit, Brandon Inge was a HUGE fan favorite here because he was nice to fans and media. Alot of Tigers fan wer angry when they traded for the young 3B from Florida, Miguel Cabrera. I know people that swore off the Tigers because they took Inge's job away! Bottom line, if Ozzie Smith were an A hole like Barry Bonds, he wouldn't have got the 5% required to stay on the ballot, much less the ridiculous and insulting 91% he got on the first ballot! I always wanted to visit Cooperstown, but the politics have ruined it for me.

Ozzie got in as an exceptional fielder. His batting stats aren't the reason he got in.
Trammell was not anything exceptional in the field. And his totally inept manging career has killed any chance he'd be reconsidered.
