My comp is stuck on installing windows xp but it keeps giving me an error message and I can't get past it. I can't even get it to go to safe mode; i would like to wipe the hard drives (i have 2) and install the new version of vista that I just got and use the bigger hard drive in my new computer. Can anyone help me!?!?!? I am so frustrated I am going to throw the whole damn thing out the window!

All windows CD's will allow you to boot from the CD. You need to reset the bios on your machine to boot CD first.

Check the screen when you first turn the machine on it will say press f1, f10, escape, delete, etc to enter setup. That is the bios setup screen.

Insert the Installation CD in the CD drive and restart the computer. You will be able to totally reformat and reinstall from that point.

I have another PC that is working, is it possible to put the virus-damaged hard drive there and reinstall the Windows XP? ... I finally reinstall Windows XP by putting the hard drive into an identical computer with a working CD-ROW. I think the problem may lie in the motherboard

Reformatting your hard drives is an extreme solution. Also if the Vista you want to install is an upgrade it won't work if you are starting with a newly formatted disk. (xp is no longer there so it can find nothing to upgrade)

Your problem sounds like a corruption of your boot sector. Go to the url below and follow the instrucitons for launcing AND using the XP Recovery Console. You will need your XP CD.

Get into your bios, change your boot order (CD First) and load the OS. It's not necessary to fdisk with xp or higher.

FDISK doesn't work with Windows XP, so you'll need to work from a Win98 bootdisk to use it.
