The light comes on because one of many possible events is occuring that may cause a breakdown in the future.A technician needs to retrieve the code that is indicated by the light and find the problem. One of the most common reasons for this is a loose gas cap.

Your service engine soon is a check engine light. It means basically that something is not right, not that you need service soon.
It's very unlikely that it has to do with any fluids. And I wouldn't take it to autozone, they can't tell you what needs to be replaced but they can guess, at your expense. Since the vehicle isn't OBDII I don't even know if they will check it, I think it is beyond their capabilities.
You should take it to a regular shop that does diagnosis on this vehicle. It is not like the newer ones.

The only way this light comes on is to tell you that you have a problem with the emission system,To save time and money please take your astro to a chevy dealership. They will scan the system tell you the problem and fix it, A lot of the emission system is covered under warrenty for a long time. These repaires will not cost you anything.

There are a lot of things that might make the "engine soon check"light comes on and off.Go to autozone, they will check that for you for free. And they will also tell you what you need yo replace.Probably,it is the coolant engine sensor that need to be replaced....probably.Just go to autozone and check it when the light is ON

sounds to me that your almost 20 year old van needs to be serviced. You should get a diagnostic run on it. This can be done at a local service station or an All Tune or Lube.

When was the last time you had the oil changed, or tune up?

it means the computer is "throwing a code" you're having some kind of problem with some type of sensor or something could be simple could be serious you need to take it to a mechanic to have them diagnose the problem

it usually means you have to service your engine. soon. take it to a mechanic, what else? I think you could've figured that one out on your own.
