One becomes alive... a body becomes alive when it has a beating heart. Apart from the beating heart... the body... the form of a human being can function properly only when the brain is properly working. Brain in a human being is the controller of all things physical. Instructions to all parts of the body are received and sent by brain. If the brain stops functioning... the human being becomes clinically dead.
Every organ in the body plays its own part. The death of the organ does not necessarily indicate the death of the body. If one loses one eye or even both eyes... one becomes blind, yet survives! But in absence of the brain... nothing survives... the body practically becomes dead! The moment the soul atman within the body leaves... the body immediately decays and dies!
Our soul atman acts like a battery for the body. The moment it is removed... the body becomes worthless! Brain simply acts as the controller of the body... the controller of all functions physical! After the death of the body... the soul atman that resides within the heart leaves to manifest another body. If matching parents are available on Mother Earth... it immediately manifests another body! A new journey of life starts!
Our soul atman resides within our heart. We can never see our soul atman but only feel its presence. Those who travel the path of absolute truthfulness hear the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman within that always prompts us on the right path from time to time. It never guides us on the wrong path! The working of the soul in the body is governed by the doctrine of karma.
Every soul atman manifests a body to work out its karma. On its own no soul atman can remove the impurities within. Like the metal in an ore cannot separate itself and requires proper mining machinery... our soul atman requires a body to work out its karma and remove the dross within. The basic necessities of life keep us alive and they are: water, air, light, food, shelter and love! The belief in soul and afterlife is another aspect of living called hope, which comes under the heading of "looking forward to things" such as goals. Here is where religious beliefs come in. The body, like a working machine needs all its parts to work in unison. If one of the parts fails to work, it messes up the assembly line and there begins the problem where the production gets "backed up"...organs begin to malfunction or die and it messes up the function of the body. Nothing to do with the soul. The soul lives on because it's spiritual and may even take up residence in another host...but that's another topic to explore. Hope this explanation helped you a bit!

I believe we are quantum beings....bio-electrical-spirits I think the mind body framework is the anchor for the soul in this dimension. I think the vital organs serve as parts of the machine end of 'us' and that when one malfunctions or is damaged it is a case of (by modern medical intervention) repairing the broken part...and sometimes the failure is fatal and the soul gives up when a part cannot be repaired.
so the body keeps us 'alive' in this world...the matrix of our mind body machine anchor the soul to the body. The soul lives on when the body can not....so it is not the soul that keeps us alive.
The soul is the part that our bodies are designed to house in this earth school.
I think there needs to be a soul component in order for the 'being' to develop into a viable life in the first place.I think souls are the template for our human form to grow. I think the soul is joined at the moment of conception and that when the physical ceases the soul retains the memory of the person it was and goes on eternal.

some of the earlier philosophers were the first to really ponder the connection between body, soul, and mind. Some concluded they were all one, others concluded they were seperate entities. Today, the more common religions view the soul and the body to be different. they work together in that the soul is contained in the body, and that is that person. the body is mortal and flesh dies with the earth, but the soul lives forever in a supernatural, if you will, sense. they are both equally "real"

The soul is the one alive. It doesn't keep us alive because it is us alive. The soul doesn't die. The soul lives forever. When we die, the soul goes to Heaven or to Hell. The soul feels the pain, which many say is the proof that we're alive. The soul feels the emotions. When there is organ malfunction or disfunction, the person dies because the body has grown old. But the soul remains as good as new. Then the body expires but the soul lives to eternity: in Heaven or Hell.

honestly for me my fantasies keep me alive if i couldn't pretend to be somewhere else or pretend to be someone else i would die from always being depressed and misunderstood. I belive that we all have a soul buts its our will to live that keeps us alive. A terminally ill person can still survive even if an organ decideds to stop functioning its very physcological if ur mind is telling you that you will live u must live it will affect your body and heal you. Thats why on the brink of death even an atheist will turn to God; its the hope that they will live, either live or die peacefully instead of afraid of an awful destination or depresssed at the thought of not exsisting anymore with no destination at all.

Soul, body, and life are integral. The Hewbrew word in the Bible is nephesh, and while we think of the soul as immortal (a Greek concept, see Plato's "Phaedo") yet in the Bible there is also reference to a dead nephesh, a priest (cohen) is not to come in contact with one, it defiles him. The new Testament talks about the resurrection of the body rather than the immortality of the soul. The Saducees differed from the Pharisees on this question, and as as question put to Jesus in the Gospels he sided with the Pharisees. Paul caused an uproar in the Sanhedrin over this same question, getting his case thrown out and moved to Rome.
In philosophy see A.J. Ayers, "The Ghost in the Machine" , There is another Philosopher whose name is Gilbert who weighed in on the subject, but I can't immediately put my finger on the article. Thomas Aquinas wrote a paper called "de Anima" in which he cited the indivisibilty of the soul from the body , yet its integrity despite the divisibilty of the body.
Rene desCartes identified it with consciouysness, and by the practice of radical sollipsism came up with the concept "cogito ergo sum" "I think therefore I am."

In the Bible, Genesis 2, it says God breathed into Adam's nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living being. When God made Adam, the breath of life He gave is Adam's soul. But even if we die, our soul will remain, it will not die. Read the Bible, it's our manual. It will tell you how we were created, how are we to function and live and what will happen to us after we die.

" Essentialism " was refuted long ago. Natural chemical/physical processes keep us alive. I f an organ, such as the heart, stopped functioning, then it would beg the question; " why does the person die "?
