How would they even know? If such intelligence were coming to rule and dominate this world, there would be nothing to do. Any living being that are stronger or more intelligent than others would either eliminate or pass by without doing anything because they wouldn't care less about us!

please consider this 60 day time line...
day 0-15 would be spent by the astronomers confirming a collegue's discovery
day 15-22 would be spent trying to get through the buearucratic (Pentagon, Science Advisor, CIA, nasa, etc etc) opposition
day 23-30 would be spent advising the elected leadership, formulating a UN speech, advising the worlds religions, notifing other world leaders (which would be immeadiatly rejected by the Islamic world). Amatuer astronomers and radio operators would contact local news outlets about an anomolay in communications.
day 31- 45, After the UN speech, the rest of the world science community would have to confirm the US findings. Various military (world wide) forces would be placed on alert and positioned to protect the current regimes.
Meetings will be held to explore protective options. As usual, some one will want to fire our nuclear missles at the intruders. Unfortunatly, someone remembers that they are only intercontinental ballistic (not enough thrust for orbital escape to attact the interlopers). Alien ship is located and tracked with probable encounter time frame established.
day 46-60 Chaos reigns. People get religion, people lose religion. looting and stock piling of food and other goods begins. Martial law is the law of the land. people head for the hills and form armed bands. Goverments have more meetings, attempt to establish communications (you didn't say how it was determined the aliens were hostile)
day 61 Aliens arrive and explain thier intentions.
If friendly and were mis-understood, all is well. if truly hostile, they will make every effort to destroy any resistance and reduce humans to cattle. There will be an elete group of humans to control the rest. Was't there several sci-fi themes along this line

There would be absolutely nothing that could be done. The fact that they are able to travel across interstellar distances is a testimony to their immense technological strength, and that they also have hostile intent clearly shows that they are more than capable to subduing a planet such as ours. This is the sort of conflict that would be referred to in later years as "The Seven Hour War" or words to that effect.

No doubt the US would assume a position of control over the global situation, there being no time for delegations and the creation of a UN Extra-Terrestrial Task Force. Negotiations and/or attempts to communicate would fail across the board if the visitors are truly hostile. I hope to the Odd that the movies are not accurate, but knowing the current administration they probably would be: the United States would employ the only solution available, one that would be as much of an answer to the problem as alcohol is to depression. They would deploy nuclear weapons, and it i probable that these advanced aliens would either be immune to such threats, or be able to seize control of the warheads and employ them as they see fit. The alien invaders would need not lift a finger as they watch us destroy ourselves.

Of course, I find it hard to believe that an alien race would haul itself across the galaxy just to destroy whatever life they encounter. But then, that's just based upon my inapplicable human values.

The U.S. would try to everything they could to make peace with the aliens, however the world will fall into economic failure as extremists destroy and suicide, people run with terror and believe anything they see and hear, and wars are fought with the extra-terrestrials and other countries. Overall, the world would be taken over by the aliens because any race that is able to travel hundreds-millions of lightyears clearly has the technology and the ability to destroy the simple us, who can't travel to Mars.

They would tell the extra-terestrials that they were on the path to total domination on planet earth already and wouldnt have anyone stop them. Then they would duke it out for total world domination, mwahahaha.

If extras had the technology to come here to take over, there is probably little we could do to counter or overcome their technology.

Like they are doing now about UFO reports....
Keep it under wraps and only have other powerful governments assist.
