The Eurovision is an annual song contest held by the European Broadcasting Union. Each country that is a member of the union (it doesn't have to be a European country) can participate and send one song to the contest each year. It must be a new song that has never been released on an album before. Then there is a show where all the songs are performed live and the show is broadcasted in all the participating countries (as well as many other countries around the world). After the songs have been performed there is a televote in all the participating countries and each country gives points according to how many votes each song got in the local televote. In the end there is a winner and the winning country gets to host the show the following year.

It's a very popular event in many European countries and it's quite controversial because countries tend to give their neighbouring countries or allies points and a lot of people feel like politics matter more than the quality of the music entries.

Eurovision itself started as a group of european TV companies getting together to broadcast the same programme simultaneously to all the members. This was in the days BEFORE satellite and digital technology and was a huge breakthrough in broadcasting. They used to show concerts, sports events etc. They also started a song contest where all the member countries, and there were only about 15 at that time, put in an entry and they were jusdged by a panel from each other country. Katie Boyle was the usual overall presenter, no matter what country it came from due to he French language skills. Now with the expansion of Europe, the use of digital technology etc, it is open to countris that didn't even exist then, and the idea of Eurovision has spread.
