Many gifted athletes are good when they are young at just about every sport; their pure athletic talent can carry them a long way. This is why a lot of high school athletes are good, and even get scholarship offers, in multiple sports.
Lots of athletes have the talent for football and either track or baseball. Many make the choice depending upon their physical size; if they have potential NFL size, they play football, otherwise they pick track or baseball. Sometimes it's just that they like football more, or baseball, or track.
Track athletes often have this problem in junior high and high school. I had a classmate who got a college track scholarship. He would have been the best in every event at our school - 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, hurdles, discus, shot put. But it became clear about his sophomore year that his collegiate future was in probably the 800, as he had the speed to kick as well as the endurance to run it really fast. And he placed in the 800 at state, so it made sense.
Another teammate got a scholarship for the 400, long & triple jumps. He could have run every race up to the 800 and the jumps, but found that his speed was consistent up to the 400, so the 400 became his best running event, and he placed at state in the long & triple jumps.
Basically, they figure out what their skills are best suited for and then go for it.

Most runners find their event through experimentation. They try different things until they find their event. Some people do not find their event until after college.
