All you need to do is read the current edition of the magazine Backpacker. The article discusses the land claims of the Havasupai, the tribe which at one time lived in and around the Grand Canyon. What you'll read is that this tribe's land claims have been totally ignored, and now that the BIA has given them the opportunity to manage some National Forest land downstream from the National Park, there have been major problems. Their tribe was expected to "die out" in the 70s, and that callous equation was part of how and why the tribe is having problems now. This tribe is but one example, but the article is fresh and timely, thus may be of interest to you.

The number one argument while dealing with the first nations in the 16th century clearly was firearms, for the typical native American at that time stood 3 or 4 times taller, was bigger and perhaps way smarter than its european counterpart.

Looking at it straight, one group of aristocrats simply could not sail all the way from France eating biscuits and try to win a debate against a north american tribe. Even the Viking berserkers did not succeed in that at their prime.

Only plain pity from Americans could have allowed european cohabitation to happen, and history precisely reports some. Americans indeed aided Europeans in activities such as hunting and crops. Besides, the whole furr market we know of in Canada was first initiated by natives and I don't think the first colons would have survived either winter or sickness without the help of indigenous tribes and their medecine men. Even before that happened, Americans might have learned from shamans (looking at the stars, telling prophecies, etc) that their time had gone by, and that they had to pass the torch to "the envahisseur".

From there firearms, numbers and viruses made a difference. And because these abuses were not in the script, the First Nations justly believe that they deserve better days.

I'm not sure that was really what you asked about... yet it was my pleasure to answer.
