If you just got this turtle, don't panic. Most turtles take a couple of days to get adjusted to new places and part of this adjustment is not eating. Once they feel comfortble they will eat. This can take up to a week. If it's been a week, take it to a vet. They don't miss their partners. Turtles are solitary creatures by nature and only deal with other turtles in their homes. Your turtle is not stupid. Turtles are actually quite intelligent.

Describe your setup

Reptiles often wont eat because of bad husbandry.

Does the turtle have a basking light overtop of a land area? If so what is the temp under the light?

Does the turtle have a flourescent uvb bulb? (reptisun 5.0, 10.0 or repti-glo 5.0 or 8.0 are the descent brands) If not the turtle is going to get soft shell and metabolic bone disease because it cannot process calcium.

What is the temperature of the water?

What size tank? How often is it cleaned? Do you have a filter for it? How long have you had the turtle?

I'm going to make a lot of guesses here...

Is it a Red-ear Slider? Did it have a cage mate who died? Is the 'cage thing' a plastic tank of some sort?

Turtles have a few basic needs: big space with warm, clean water; sunlight-like lighting; good basking sites; the right diet.

I'm betting that your turtles did not get some of this and it affected them.
