I can only speak from 1953-present. Men wore dress hats and suits on Sunday. with son doing the same but usually bow-ties. Moms had hats with feathers pinned to them and wore glove as did the little girls.Very Ozzie and Harriet.Boys usually had a coonskin cap from TV series about Davey Crockett and cap guns featured fro other stars of the time like Gene Autry, Poncho and Sisco, Zorro, Paladin ( Have Gun ,Will Travel)
Watch " Back to the Future 1", American Graffiti, Grease, Happy days, and you'll just be getting an good idea of fashions. Levis with ankles so tight you could'nt get them over your feet. White sock with red and black stripe around top, black pointy toed shoes, called " Cockroach Killers or "Fence Climbers" penny loafers Brylcream, butch wax, penny candy, 10cent Cokes. List can go on forever. This is just for years up to about 1963-1964. Things changed quick after the Beetles came to the US. Then the pointed toed shoes were called, " Beetle Boots"

1900-1939
People wore very formal outfits, very neat and tidy. Men, wore suits and more proper clothes, women, all dresses and fancy hats.
1940-1969
People wore slightly plainer clothing. Women wore dresses, also poodle skirts, saddle shoes and hot pants. Men wore suits, plain shirts, polos and jeans.
1970-1999
Bell bottoms, hot pants, poodle skirts, jeans, basically a lot of the disco stuff in the early 1970's. Later on, it got more normal, like women, pants and a t-shirt and men, suits, jeans and polos.
Hope this helps!
