Well Britain took the view, that Vietnam was a sovereign nation.Ho Chi Minn had overthrown the french. It was one country and communist. The fact that a puppet govt had been set up in the south, did'nt deny the people to resolve this matter It was an internal situation, that the ruling party had every right to subdue. It only involved Vietnam. The UN thought otherwise, the rest is history.
Britain was right,Vietnam was and is a communist state

The British were disengaging from their own colonies and appreciated the difficulty of the issues: they did a much better job than other European countries of leaving behind viable countries- India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa.

Britain had quite left-wing governments on-and-off during the 50s and 60s and didn't see communism quite as starkly as did America- they fought communism successfully in a much more low-key way in Malaya in the 1950s. The French were trying to re-establish themselves in a colony where their power had been completely overthrown by Japan... the British understood how hard this would be. They did not see any national interest in Vietnam in the 1960s, and warned America of the danger of becoming involved.

First, it was France's problem. Secondly, we thought it was the US problem. Thirdly, if you look at the newspapers, the British had a similar situation with the Irish at the same time.

France screwed up. We screwed up. The British did just fine.
