I am clueless when it comes to taking care of flowers and plants. I have a small balcony and wish to make it nice for the spring/summer season. I would like to put some plants and flowers on my balcony. I am not a big fan of plants, especially ferns. I hate ferns. I would like something low maintenance both plant wise and flower wise. I have a small table/wood bench out there now where I would like to get nice pots to put them in. Also some tips on how to care for them would be helpful as well.
Thank you for your help. . .I am a clueless gardener :(

I gardened for almost 20 years on a balcony (15th floor). You can get the brackets and window boxes to hang. I put wave petunia's in them and man they looked great. I did tomatoes and numerous items in pots. Don't worry about flies? Shouldn't be a problem. Very important to add fertilizer to pot. Either liquid every 2 weeks or you can buy granular time release fertilizer. Gardening in my passion. Before long you will be an experienced gardener!! Good Luck.

Anything potted looks hot. Cedar shrubs add height and privacy. If flowers attracting bugs is a concern why not grow vegetables, a lettuce pot (many varieties) is beautiful and practical. As well herbs are hardy and repel some bugs, good candidates are ant variety of thyme, chives, parsley etc. If you buy healthy bedding plants get good quality potting soil and water daily you will have yourself a green thumb in no time.

Mexican Heather is your answer. It can take sun or shade and does well if not watered regular. It has tiny green waxy leaves and blooms tiny purple flowers all summer long. Being in a pot I would water it well at least once a week. It does not have a scent but most plants will have some bugs come around. It does attract butterflies.

I'd go for cacti and succulents. They really come in incredible shapes and colours, are very low maintenance so if you forget them it is not a disaster. Also they show off the pots that you choose really well. Plant them with colourful or white stones over the soil around the base and they can really look fantastic without any effort at all.

Flowers are high maintenance. Try succulents as plants, they are low care and high color. All of the information to take care of plants is out there in cyberspace. You do have to love the plants to make them grow, but it's not difficult to have a nice little potted garden. Marigolds are easy, as are geraniums. Geraniums do attract moths and therefore baby moths. I have potted orchids, roses, succulents, ficus benjamina, and calla lilies on my patio.

What direction does your balcony face? Seeing that the hot weather is coming, with some plants, it makes a difference.

a nice sweet potato vine will do nicely if you let it grow over the side. Sweet potato vine is nice because it looks nice and doesn't require much care. For your table, some nice cacti will do you nicely. Many of them are quite decorative and most require almost no care. If you have an empty corner, a nice pottere ponytail palm could fill it.
