You have to remember what a decadent society Cuba was before, when it had a preponderance of Americans.....

Now it is one of the safest and friendliest places on earth.... just 93 miles from the Florida coast with it's 120 murders on average a month.

Humanist, your assertions are historically right on the money. Cuba, is much better off now that the U.S. has little influence over the island nation. When the U.S. had a cozy relationship with Cuba, prior to Castro ascending to power, it propped up and supported a military dictatorship headed by the ruthless Battista. He in turn allowed for rampant gambling and prostitution to engulf the island all in order to cater to the American businessmen and other well to do U.S. citizens. Furthermore, he sold out the Cuban citizenry, allowing American interests to buy up land and resources previously owned by Cuban people, thus relegating a once proud group of self-sufficient land and business owners to little more than serfs and peasants.

In fact if anyone can be blamed for Cuba’s turning towards Communist rule, it is the excesses of the U.S.’s involvement with Cuba and its corrupt politicians back in the 1950s. The people of Cuba, in order to regain the autonomy their country once had, enlisted the help of Castro and his right hand man, the man on my Yahoo avatar, Ernesto “Che” Guevera, to liberate Cuba from the U.S.’s puppet government.

Cuba, today, is a country who, depending on who you ask, can either be portrayed as a very progressive country, or can be seen as despotic and repressive. Some fled from Cuba, because they felt Cuba belonged to the latter form of government. Many stayed, when they had a chance to flee, because they believe Cuba, in spite of its destitution, is a country that embodies a virtuous ideology.

Most people like to disparage Cuba by stating that its impoverished predicament is indicative of what happens when the ideals of Marxism are carried out to its fullest extent. Though I don’t consider myself a Marxist, I think this characterization of Cuba as an example of the failures of Marxism is a bit distorted. Granted Marxism is a highly idealistic concept, and much of it only works fine in theory, because it ignores some basic tendencies in human nature and group dynamics. However, I don’t think the entirety of Cuba’s poverty, nor the failure of Marxism in other countries in which it was tried, are entirely the result of Marxism’s inherent flaw, as much as was western societies, like the United States, refusal to allow them to succeed.

When countries, like the United States, effectively halt trade to nations that are overtly Marxist like Cuba, it is inevitable that they will descend into dire economic circumstances.

I live in Florida and I get so tired of listening to RICH cubans tell me about how their lifestyle has been destroyed because they are no longer allowed to keep slaves thanks to Castro...

So sorry for them that they will have to sip lattes in their BMW's in the united states!!!

Admittedly, I don't know that much about the politics but I have alot of trouble understanding why Rich Cuban immigrants would complain so much in Boca Raton... If they feel "poor" now because of Castro, then they DID have too much money...
No one is coming from Cuba on a raft... that's just silly...

You are goofy. If Cuba is so great, go there and take the place of someone trying to escape.

Yes, and that is why they are all trying to row here on inner tubes risking their lives, because Cuba truly has it all !!!
They used to 'Own" Baseball, until all their good players escaped, err, oops, were hijacked here....
But they still have great cigars, Slick Willie himself told me that.

Remember their slogan, "Cuba is for Lovers" !!!!! Of Horrible Poverty !!!

Yes, that Horrible Propoganda of "How do I get something to eat around here" ???
Oh, and you are welcome to remain there. And have a nice day. Tomorrow is Sunday, you get to eat again. It's a long way after that to your next meal on Wednesday!!!!!
