My goal is to be more well rounded. I already have good grades, high test scores and a lot of community service hours. I was wondering if this would put me over the top!

Yes, it helps a little bit. Would you be insulted if I told you that making a grammatical error like the one you made in your question would remove you from consideration? College professors would automatically hand your paper back with an F. Since Larry Sommers got replaced, it will help even more to be a women and a minority. Geographical location plays a role also.

This year about 22,000 kids applied to Harvard and 20,000 were turned down. No one applies who isnt well qualified, so what you need to do is to show the Harvard people that you are not just a big brain, that there is something about you that is definitely more than an academic grind, that you are a leader, and not just a leader, but an effective, successful leader.

I don't think cheerleading is exactly in Harvard's style -- after all, they have no sports scholarships in the Ivy leagues. Sports are not prestigious there. But say you were to become the cheerleader captain and then took your team to the National championships, meanwhile raising thousands of dollars for charity by giving demonstrations and shows, bringing paraplegic kids to your games and making them part of your squad,... OK, then being on the cheerleader squad would be useful because it would show that you were a leader full of creative ideas... that's what Harvard wants besides, of course, the 4+ GPA and 2350 SATs...When you are at Harvard, look into the humor magazine. I think you might fit in there. They would be in to a cheerleader. :)

Good luck!

One of my best friends applied to Harvard five years back. She had a 1560 SAT, 4.0, was a member of the national honor society, future business leaders of America and the united cultural congress. She also volunteered on the weekends at a home for people with AIDS. To top it all off, she was a female AND a minority. She wasn't accepted! I don't know WHAT you have to do to get into that school!

I am sure any extracurriculars would only strengthen your chances :)

You have the right idea but cheer leading is not the right thing to do. Join a few sports teams, even if its only as a manager. You need to tutor and do all sorts of stuff. Join clubs at your school. I had to do all that and more just to get accepted to Drexel, I can imagine Harvard will want a lot more.

Harvard could careless if you can do a split or yell at the top of your lungs.... grades, test scores, honors/awards and community service are what they look at. The first two are EXTREMELY important.

In the big picture...not at all. In fact, in some crowds, admitting to have been a cheerleader is something to be ashamed of.

I don't think it'll put you "over the top;" however, I do think it will look good on your application.
