I have been growing a plant in my back yard for about two years and it WONT DIE! It grows back every year, we dont water it, it gets shade and light. They have a large and think bamboo like trunk with the horizontal like seperations. The leaves are large and heart shaped. They grow in stalks and are about a foot apart. Green in color and no flowering.

I looked into bamboo imposters and i cant find any! It is also very strong and when it dies it turns brown. The have grown to be over 6 feet and grow VERY fast with no care needed!

Please let me know. I have done a great deal of searching. Thank you

it almost looks like the japanese knotweed but i cant seem to find a good photo of their stalks. The young plants seem to look a lot like the photos of knotweed "young"

The plant could possibly be a shalom. Or a plant in the same plant family. My leaves aren't exactly heart shaped but everything else is the same

The horizontal seperations you described make it sound like a grass, like bamboo. also the rapid growth, and stalks point to a type of bamboo. the plant probably does flower you just haven't noticed it because it isn't as flashy as other plants. . The only thing that doesn't fit is the heart shaped leaves. But does it really matter what it is? just spray it with a high -strength herbicide. If that doesn't work, find a way to pull it up.

The knotweed sounds plausible, but when those flower you'd have to be blind not to notice. Also, knotweeds grow closer together than she is describing. If it is knotweed, you're in trouble. they can regrow from any part left in the ground.

Sounds like JAPANESE KNOTWEED or MEXICAN BAMBOO (Polygonum cuspidatum).
The stems have knotty joints, reminiscent of bamboo. Like you say, it grows 6-10' tall and has large pointed oval or triangular leaves.
To control it: Cut at least 3 times each growing season and/or treat with Rodeo (10) or (11).
OR- Use a driveway de-icing salt solution! Salt kills plants.
You cannot be nice with this invasive monster! It can spread via root system and can resprout from fragments.
See if this photo is your plant:

Here's another site with a closeup of the knotweed Just so you know, it's VERY invasive. Scroll to the bottom of this site and read:
